MERRY CHRISTMAS COOKIES - Betty Carmack

1 Cup Butter or Margarine
1 1/2 Cups Powdered Sugar
1 Egg
1 1/2 tsp. Vanilla
2 1/2 Cups Flour
1 tsp. Soda
1 tsp. Cream of Tartar

Cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla and mix well. Sift together flour, soda, and cream of tartar. Blend well. Food coloring may be added at this point if desired (Red is pretty for Christmas). Chill. Roll out. Decorate with colored sugar. Cut into shapes and place on a lightly greased baking sheet. Bake in 375 degree oven 7 to 8 minutes our until just lightly browned. Take up immediately.

Note: Sometimes I follow the recipe to the chilling point and if I don't want to take time to cut out shapes, etc. I make balls by teaspoon full and flatten with fork to about 1/4 inch.
