Reading the Bible is sheer pleasure. The poetry, history, song, proverbs,
prophecy, letters, and epistles provide the reader with great wonder and
enjoyment. Reading the Bible should not be a drudgery or lifeless routine. It is
exciting, captivating, inspiring, and humorous! When we allow the Holy Spirit to
speak to us through God's Word; our reading crosses from mere enjoyment to life
transformation.
Suggestions for Reading the Bible Through
The Bible is not just great literature; it is the inspired Word of God. Just as
the Holy Spirit was present in the writing of Scripture, so must He be present
in our reading of the Word of God. We can read the Bible without the leadership
of the Holy Spirit and still learn Bible facts. But we will never gain insights
into the truth and application of God' Word until we ask the Holy Spirit to open
our minds and reveal his truth to us. Each day as you start to read, pray that
God's Holy Spirit will help you to understand what you read and apply the truth
to your own life Set aside a definite time every day to read the Bible. Consider
that time as a daily appointment with God and keep the appointment faithfully.
Read the Word of God deliberately, without letting the pressures of
predetermined time limits cause you to hurry. As you read God's Word let the
teachings, places, people, and events come alive for your own life. Do not be
disturbed if you do not understand some passages. Sometimes further reading or
study will help clarify the problem. Keep a notebook or a journal as you read
the Bible through. Writing down what you read will help you remember and apply
God's Word in your life situations.
The Bible you hold in your hand holds the answer to humanity's past, present,
and future. It is a wellspring of wisdom and divine' instruction that never runs
dry. Draw from its spring of wisdom daily and find direction and purpose for
your life. The Bible urges us to seek after wisdom and to seek after
understanding. (Proverbs 4:5-9) Wisdom is the ability to meet each situation
with discernment and good judgment. Wisdom involves using the knowledge we have
to take the proper course of action - if we know and don't act, it is the same
as not knowing at all. When we let Christ become the source of our wisdom, He
will guide us in making wise decisions and acting on them. Wisdom is more
precious than rubies: and nothing that you can desire can compare with it.
Proverbs 3:15 "She (Wisdom) is more precious than rubies: and all the things
thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her."
Feast your eyes, your mind, and your heart on the treasures found in the Word of
God. God's greatest delight for His children is that we to know Him and live a
life that reflects His love and glory. We will never get to know Him without
reading and studying His Word. Jeremiah 9:23,24 "Thus saith the Lord, Let not
the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might,
let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in
this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise
loving kindness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord,"
